Privacy policy
Last updated: 6 October 2026
Throttle ("we", "us") is a navigation and driving community app. This policy explains what we collect, why, who we share it with, and the choices you have. We don't sell your personal information and we don't show ads.
What we collect
- Account details: your email address, password (stored securely by Firebase Authentication; we never see it), display name, username and profile photo.
- Location: your precise location while you use the map, navigate or are in a convoy, including in the background during navigation or a convoy so guidance and sharing keep working with the screen off.
- Trips: routes you drive, distance, duration and speeds, saved to your account so you can see your log book and stats. Trips are private to you unless you share one.
- Things you share: community posts (photos, route sketch, title, caption, tags), comments, chat and convoy messages, hazard reports, meets you create, and your garage (cars and their details).
- Convoy radio: when you hold TALK, we record your voice until you let go (up to 15 seconds) and send the clip to the members of your convoy. We only use the microphone while you hold TALK.
- Places: saved places (home, work, spots), recent searches and destinations.
- Reports you send: bug reports (with your phone model and OS version) and content reports.
- Notifications: a device token so we can send you convoy and chat notifications, if you allow them.
How we use it
- To provide navigation, routing, traffic, hazards, fuel prices and weather.
- To run convoys: while you're in a convoy, your live location, speed, heading and ETA are shared with the other members of that convoy only, and stop being shared when you leave.
- To show your posts, comments, hazard reports and profile to other users as you choose to share them.
- To keep the community safe: reviewing reports, removing content that breaks our terms, and acting on abuse. Some of this is done by trusted community moderators (shown with a MOD badge). They see reported content, usernames and account status, never your email address, trips or location.
- To fix bugs and improve the app.
Who we share it with
We use these service providers to run the app. They process data on our behalf or receive only what's needed for the request:
- Google Firebase (Authentication, Firestore, Realtime Database, Storage, Cloud Functions, Cloud Messaging): stores your account and app data.
- Mapbox: maps, search and routing. Your location, searches and route requests are sent to Mapbox.
- OpenStreetMap Overpass API: speed-limit lookups for the area around you.
- Transport for NSW: live traffic incidents for your area.
- NSW FuelCheck: fuel prices near you.
- Open-Meteo: weather for your location.
Other users see what you share: your profile, posts, comments, hazard reports and meets; convoy members see your live location and messages while you're in their convoy. We may disclose information if required by law.
Keeping and deleting your data
We keep your data while you have an account. Hazard reports expire automatically. Convoys are temporary: a convoy, with its chat, voice clips and live locations, is deleted within an hour of the drive ending (or of nobody in it moving or chatting for an hour). A convoy that never sets off is deleted after 7 days without activity.
Convoy radio clips are deleted after 24 hours, or sooner when the convoy ends. Only members of that convoy can play them. If someone reports a clip, we keep a copy until the report has been reviewed.
Delete your account any time in the app: Garage → Settings → Account & legal → Delete account. This permanently deletes your account, profile, garage, trips, saved places, posts, comments, messages (including voice messages), hazard reports, meets you created, friends and photos. You can also email us to request deletion.
Your choices
- Location access can be changed in iOS Settings; navigation and convoys need it to work.
- Microphone access can be turned off in iOS Settings; you won't be able to talk on the convoy radio. Turn off Settings → Convoy → Play convoy radio to stop clips playing out loud.
- Notifications can be turned off in the app or in iOS Settings.
- You can block other users and report content in the app.
- You can ask us for a copy of your data or to correct it by emailing us.
Security
Data is sent over encrypted connections and protected by access rules so only you, or the people you share with, can read it. No system is perfectly secure, but we work to protect your information.
Children
Throttle is not for children under 16 and we don't knowingly collect their information.
